Resident Stefania Aust with fire and safety guru Attie Benson.
A hot topic was discussed at Elphin Lodge’s monthly coffee morning on August 22 when fire and safety guru Attie Benson told residents what they need to do to become fire smart.
Key to fire safety is practising specific fire safety and fire prevention behaviours and knowing what to do in the event of a fire, he told residents of the Rand Aid retirement village.
Attie is the managing director of AEJM Fire and Safety Guru. He has extensive experience and spent 35 years as a fire fighter, ending that chapter of his life as senior district manager at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Emergency Services.
“He was instrumental in ensuring that Elphin Lodge’s care centre – the Ron Smith Care Centre – meets fire safety standards and that in the event of a fire, we will be able to safely evacuate our residents, some of whom are frail,” says Rand Aid senior nursing manager Matron Avril Maltman.
The morning was not all about serious matters, however. Residents had a chance to chat over plates of eats and cups of tea and coffee and a lucky draw was held.
