Hennie Smit puts a song in residents’ hearts

Egoli’s beloved Bertie brought joy to the hearts of Thembalami residents on December 5.

The 76-year-old Hennie Smit, famous for his role as Bertie in the discontinued soap opera, has performed over 20 concerts at various homes for elders.

“When I was contacted and asked if Hennie could host a free concert for our residents, I was overjoyed,” says Elize Raath, the manager of the Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre, which incorporates the Max Ordman Deaf Association.

“He has an irresistible stage presence and the residents really loved his concert. Hennie interacted beautifully with everyone and left them feeling special. It was the most rewarding morning. Everybody walked out with a smile.

“He also blessed everybody – residents and staff,” says Elize.
